We were contacted by our customer after the city called them out on some ADA codes that were not up to current standards. The main problem with their parking lot was that their handicapped ramps weren’t compliant. In addition to the handicapped ramps however the handicap striping was also in need of updates. We submitted our price and the customer agreed to it, So it was time to get the job scheduled.

How This ADA Ramp Repair Project Went

When we arrived at the job site, the first thing we do is to block the work area off so that no one unknowingly wanders into the construction area while work is being done. Once the area is safe we start making marks and shooting the elevations needed to insure that the proper grades of asphalt are installed on the handicapped ramp. Next, we started working with the asphalt to build up the handicap ramp and shape it to the proper height. We use tools such as smart levels and and transits to constantly check the grade as we pave the new ramp. We do this to insure the grade that is required stays intact. After the asphalt is distributed properly we rolled it using a 5 ton vibratory roller. Once the asphalt cooled the lines are painted and proper ADA markings are installed. Next handicap signs are installed this signage includes the handicap signs in the parking stall as well as the handicap signed required at the driveway entrance. Once all the signs where installed we cleaned up our mess and turned it back over to the customer. They were very pleased, the work passed inspection and the small office is now open for business. The customer informed us that we were the best asphalt contractors they had ever used.

Asphalt Paving In Los Angeles California

This month Empire Parking Lot Services was chosen as the preferred paving contractor for a property manager in Los Angeles, California. This paving project was located in Los Angeles, a shopping center that was in bad need of some asphalt overlays, and even a few areas that needed the asphalt to be removed and replaced completely.  Once the customer outlined what they needed, we quickly got a crew out there to get this paving contract executed.  The job itself took all day but when the smoke cleared we had installed nearly 100 tons of new hotmix asphalt.  The customer was very pleased as where the shop owners that got a face-lift on the parking lot near their businesses.

Asphalt Contractor Equipment Needed

To get this paving job done we needed to bring out several pieces of asphalt paving equipment. Included in the list of needed equipment was the following, an asphalt saw was needed to saw-cut the pavement areas designated for removal. Then we used a back hoe with an attachment to break the freshly saw cut asphalt areas out and ready them for disposal. After the back hoe was done breaking the asphalt we used it to load the dump trucks and ship it off to the dump. Next we brought in our skip loader to move asphalt around the job. A skip loader is used for this purpose because it can do the work of ten men in half the time. After the asphalt was distributed throughout the project we used a 5 ton vibratory roller to compact the fresh asphalt and ready it for traffic.

Have you ever eaten at Chick-fil-a? Well if the answer is no, then you don’t know what you are missing! Chick-fil-a is a nation wide chain of chicken restaurants that serve very tasty breaded and grilled chicken sandwiches. I have 2 words for you Char-Grilled Chicken Sandwich. OK so that was 4 words. Or 3? It doesn’t matter what does matter is they are very tasty. So anyways the point I am trying to make is that we ate a lot of food while working on these projects. The first job we did was a Chick-fil-a located in San Marcos California. As asphalt contractors we work on many fast food company parking lots. Chick-fil-A is one of the nicest and cleanest parking lots to work on. They really take care of there restaurants.

About the Striping Job:

We arrived at about 7 am and blocked of the job to have a safe area to work in. This project was a line & stencil painting project over the old faded striping. once the areas where blocked off we quickly set off to work. One of our men started spraying the lines while the other got on stencils. Chick-fil-a needed larger stencils in the driveways so they us gray out the old ones that where only 1 foot tall and replace them with 2 foot tall stencils. The 2′ stencils looked much better and communicated the message clearer then the old ones. Once the stenciling and lines where painted we just had to freshen up the handicaps and we where done. We arrived on to our work site today around AM.  Our crews began by thoroughly cleaning the asphalt lot.  Heavy emphasis was placed on the areas that the parking lot repairs needed to be done.  Empire’s job site today was located at a crowded business so the customer needed us to get the work done quickly, securely, and quickly.  Once the parking area was cleaned up we moved on to barricading off the work areas around the parking lot.  The customer asked for us to install some skin patches today.  This was more off a cosmetic repair then a serious fix, but with the economy being rough these days there have been more of the cosmetic jobs lately than the other.  Once the work was safely barricaded we started to apply tack coat over the areas that needed repair.  Tack coat is a liquid emulsion that works like an adhesive, in that it creates a solid bond between the existing asphalt and the new asphalt material.  As quickly as the tack coat was applied, our dump truck showed up with 3 tons of hot asphalt.  We shoveled out the asphalt into the different patches, and our crew started to do their thing!  The asphalt was quickly raked, ironed, and compacted all within a few minutes.  Speed is of the utmost importance when working on a job located at a crowded business like this.
